Being a forced laborer for the lodge has its perks—I have a key and the code to override the security system for various places inside the building—such as the theater room, the rec room, party rooms, and most importantly, the dining room.

There’s no one around as Sam and I stroll through the dining room, enclosed on three sides with huge floor-to-ceiling windows. In fact, the windows are most of the ceiling, too. The tall trees overhead stretch up and over to create a canopy and offer breathtaking views of the night sky.

Then there’s the ice cream machine.

Sam chuckles, watching me wend my way around the counters to grab bowls and spoons, then glide over to the ice cream machine. “This definitely seems like your first time stealing ice cream late at night.”

I smile, tugging down the knob for chocolate and vanilla swirl. “Never know when a late-night craving is going to hit.” I add a little strawberry to both bowls, then carry them over to the small, two-person table Sam’s sitting at.

“So,” I say, watching him dig into his bowl. “Would you like to hear my sob story?”

In the month that we’ve been hanging out and chatting, I’ve refrained from talking much about my personal life. I wasn’t sure what to say, and moreover, I wasn’t sure if he’d want to hear it. But now that things have taken a hard left turn with us, it’s important to me that he knows where I’m coming from.

Sam looks up from his ice cream. “Yes. I do. But only if you want to share.”

I smile. “Well. I don’t know about want, but I think you should know.”

“I’m all ears.”

“I got married a couple years ago,” I start. “To a guy I met on the bar scene. He was a young professional type, was making good money, and I got sucked in by all the flash and glamour. We eloped to Vegas, and soon after we got home, the emotional abuse started.”

A deep frown creases Sam’s brow, his lips tightening, but he says nothing.

I stir my melting ice cream. “I’ve always kind of been a free spirit. Artsy, I guess. Never really knowing where I wanted to go in life. I’ve always thought I’ve got plenty of time to figure things out, and when the time is right, I’ll know what’s next for me. Well, Ren didn’t like that. He harangued me constantly about getting a job—which I did. But then it wasn’t the right job. It didn’t make him ‘look good.’ He didn’t want to take me to business events and introduce me as his loser wife who was only a secretary or only a receptionist. I studied creative writing in college—not business. Maybe that was my fault, but I tried. I really did.”

“It was not,” Sam says quietly, a bite in his voice, “your fault.”

I shrug. “Ren constantly told me how worthless I was, and eventually, after I gained about fifteen pounds from stress eating, he pulled away entirely. On Christmas Eve, he informed me he’d filed for divorce.
